Simple start
When to use le, la, les…

Let’s start simply. Le is masculine. La is feminine.
So : the car -> la voiture. How do we know this is feminine (f) ….? Well because we just have to learn it off.
Unfortunately most of the vocabulary you will learn requires you to remember whether the noun is masculine or feminine,
So: the book -> le livre. This means it is masculine (m).
And so on. And all the rules that that implies….well not too many actually. You will get to understand these in time.
Look at the next sentence which has a h mute and a vowel in the two nouns:
L’homme est entré dans l’église.….
In this case homme (m) and église (f) it’s not really clear what the gender of each noun is.
Again, you will learn these off and recognise them in time.
But what you cannot say is le homme….ever! Or la église.
What about un, une ?
Just like in English we can say : a car or the car.
In French was do similarily : a car -> une voiture….. the car-> la voiture.
a book -> un livre….
Now where it gets more interesting is when using this with a noun beginning with a vowel (or h mute)
a man -> un homme
a church -> une église
